Heidi and I decided to take a quilting class and make a quilt that she could take with her to Georgia and simply lay over her bed. We both have a little experience in sewing, but this was a rather big project! Heidi had been blogging after every class and she writes so creatively and funny. I am not going to attempt to copy her.
One of the most difficult tasks was to choose the fabric. Our friend and instructor, Anne Cardoza, met us at the quilting store and taught us about color coordination - light, medium, and dark and how those mixtures can make or break the beauty of a quilt. Unfortunately, the camera doesn't quite give the best representation of the true colors. Let me just say that Heidi chose super cute fabric!
The next biggest task was to figure out the best way to lay out and coordinate the fabrics. She thought it best that we just do 7 12" squares x 5 12" squares. We then had to pin a marking paper on each piece of fabric so we would never forget the order. That was very helpful!
The next steps were just a repetition of pinning, sewing, ironing, pinning, sewing, ironing.......
We opted to use our leftover fabric and sew our own binding. Graciously, Anne cut all of our strips for us because we were under a time crunch.
And there, ladies and gentlemen, is the finished top of the quilt. You will have to stay posted for the quilt to be finally finished. Interestingly, the fabric she chose for the back is the first fabric she chose for her focal fabric.
It was so enjoyable to spend 2 hours a week being with her and doing this fun quilt. I am so grateful I had this time with her and it's a warm feeling knowing that this quilt will keep her warm, inside and out, while she serves her mission for the next 18 months, well, almost 17 months now!!
